Zimmer, Inc recalled 65,000 parts that operate as part of the NexGen knee replacement systems. Despite having to pay out for damages caused by these faulty devices, the companies have made huge profits on their respective devices. Orthopedic device manufacturers are not required to conduct clinical testing that would reveal long-term product safety and efficacy. This is a situation in which corporations and attorneys prosper at the expense of public health. Outrage continues to grow about the DePuy hip recall as hip replacement patients, treated with the DePuyASR XL Acetabular System (a hip socket used in traditional hip replacement surgery) and ASR Hip Resurfacing System (a partial hip replacement that involves placing a metal cap on the ball of the femur), are being called in for secondary surgeries to replace these faulty and negligently marketed systems. Over 93,000 people worldwide have been treated with one of these hip systems. DePuy, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson issued the recall long after it had become painfully clear that both of these systems were failing at an unprecedented rate. Even worse, often when they fail they generate metal debris that becomes lodged in tissue, potentially causing long term health concerns. Evidence has been released that DePuy had preformed studies that showed these systems to be faulty before they were released.
